Juror: Nicole Caulfield

The artist’s still lifes and portraiture explore the inherent strangeness of representing space, depth, and form on a two-dimensional surface. Central to her practice is an interest in creating convincing illusion—treating realism as a kind of visual magic. She often describes realist artists as illusionists, carefully constructing the sensation that an object exists where it does not. This fascination with space and perception drives her careful attention to light, structure, and form.
Originally from the suburbs of Chicago, the artist was shaped early on by a strong art education that inspired both her creative practice and her dedication to teaching. She earned a degree in art education from Northern Illinois University before relocating to Keene, New Hampshire, where a vibrant arts community supported her development as a working artist. During this time, she exhibited throughout the Northeast, participated in juried shows, and taught workshops locally and internationally, finding success across these endeavors.
Now based in Edmonds, Washington, just north of Seattle, the artist is returning to contemporary still life as a central focus, revisiting the themes of illusion, space, and observation that have long defined her work. Alongside her studio practice, she remains deeply committed to art education, teaching in the public school system and advocating for the importance of creative expression. She believes that art-making, regardless of skill level, is a powerful tool for mental well-being, and that strong public art education is essential to ensuring access to that power for future generations.
